Gazing into Female Voices Suppressed in Taiwanese Society:
Choreographic Analysis of the Dance Work, “Life, Depth, Voice”
The objective of this study is to discuss the choreographic process of my dance work titled “Life, Depth, Voice”. This work was performed on 7th of October 2020 at Zhong-Zheng Hall, Bo-Ai Campus of University of Taipei. From a feminist point of view, I looked back at my growing process and, as a woman, gazed into ways I had been taking to find my own voice in a patriarchal society of Taiwan. This work presented my struggle in three life phases of daughter, woman, and mother and tried to investigate the repression origin of feminist consciousness.
Practice as Research is adopted in this study as the research method. By considering the artist as the researcher, I deconstructed the power of Taiwanese patriarchal society against women and generated a feminist perspective via creation and exploration. The original ideas emerged out of my personal experience and the inspiration of several visual art works for me. Based on these materials, I further developed body movements and female body symbols for dancers with the combination of a violin live performance, sounds of real situation, and demonstration of aerial dance. This dance work helped utter women’s voices that had been suppressed and hidden in Taiwanese society.
